My dd has enjoyed a few of the Doll Hospital books. The Dear America books are for an older age group and some of them contain very mature topics. You might want to preread some of them. If you're looking for books like American Girl, The Magic Attic books are fun. Most libraries seem to carry these (they are out of print). Another fun historical series for the younger age group (7-10 years) is the Magic Treehouse series.

This is a great post. Many of these books/series I've never heard of before and I LOVE to read! I'm looking into getting a few for myself.
-
I agree - I would love to capture all this and make some lists that could be kept around...sort of like the Amazon favorite lists...one more item for a future website, I guess!
-
I can do that for you easily. I can copy my lists and make an HTML file on my Cox account. It won't be fancy though. If someone else wants to make a nicer webpage and maintain it, go ahead. I will make lists for the other historicals soon.
-
That's really sweet of you to offer - I actually could do it myself, but just don't have the time right now. I've been wanting to put a sort of reference site together for a while now with info/links on the different AG time periods, but life keeps interfering. Maybe someday...
-
I'm working on a simple HTML file. I'll post when it's done!
-
I started readind Dear America books when they first came out and I haven't sopped since. All of the girls I went to school with loved them and when a new one came out we would all read it. Its really sad that they stopped the series. They were a great way to get girls interested in history and they were so much fun to read.
Sigh. I must have spent half of my fifth grade year trying to write one. Obviously it didn't get very far.
Some themes are raher mature but when I read The Winter of the Red Snow in third grade I most certainly did not know what a 'loose woman' was and I could have cared less when the book mentioned it.
